One of the things people always when they are interested in getting started on Ebay is-"How do I know what to sell?"

I had an English teacher long ago tell me that it is best to write about what you know. I think the same is true of Ebay crap. I sell predominately baby and child related items for a couple of reasons.

It first occurred to me to sell when I was online years ago looking for clothes for my then 6 month old baby boy. I went on Ebay thinking I could get cheap clothes, maybe a whole box since it was supposed to be like an online garage sale.

I was astonished when I realized that not only were the clothes sold mostly piece by piece they were selling for nearly as much as they retailed for in the first place.

That is when I got the idea to not only sell the massive amount of Baby Gap crap I had gotten as a gift in size 0-3, but that I could go to garage sales and get other people's baby junk to sell.

As a freaky first time parent I had done all of that research into what the best car seats, high chairs, bouncer, activity centers, breast pumps and on and on. So I started doing Ebay searches for completed listings. Looking up Peg Perego strollers, Graco strollers, Pack and Plays and anything else I could think of that is on that list.

After a few nights of staying up late looking at completeds and getting a feel for what brands and items were hottest, I drove to a nearby affluent suburb and started hitting subdivision sales.

When I found something I wasnt familiar with I didnt buy it, I would either call my husband at work to look it up or write down the brand and look it up when I got home.

I learned to look for Maclaren strollers, Hanna Andersson anything, and Gymboree sets for cheap.

In many subs you may not have a garage sale whenever you want- it makes the joint look junky with last weeks garage sale signs blowing in the wind. So they schedule a day once or twice a year for everyone to purge.

I go for the swanky subs where stroller purchasing is a competitive sport and hand me downs are not as rampant.

Also little kid stuff is an easy garage sale find that doesnt get a lot of use.

I have also heard the same argument for old people stuff like lift chairs, wheelchairs and the like but that seems tacky to go into in depth.

So I sell what I know- the toys my kids have loved or want. The stroller I would love to push and I go from there.

I think it is easier to sell when you are interested in and have background on your item.

Otherwise you start buying crap you think might be worth money and you end up with a garage full of other people's junk. Trust me.

Tags: Baby Gap Gymboree Hanna Andersson

One of the things people always when they are interested in getting started on Ebay is-"How do I know what to sell?"

I had an English teacher long ago tell me that it is best to write about what you know.
