| A suggestion for Ebay customer service...

I don't function in a normal, social, human environment.
After years of hovering over a keyboard late at night singing the
praises of whatever item I found by the side of the road that day the
last thing I want to deal with is a bitchy grumpasaurus customer.
Email tends to bring out the worst in people, or it could be that other
anti-social crumudgeon types like myself prefer to shop without social
interaction so the grumpy asshole quotient is higher.
I got accused of selling a fake bag this week.
What made me really frustrated about the whole deal was that she never
contacted me to express her suspicion and request a return. She didn't
even email me and threaten me with a negative.
She just left me a neutral and said she bought the bag under the assumption it was real and it was not.
I emailed and emailed and she totally blew me off.
The bag was real, but the serial numbers of Kate Spades are easy to miss- still she could have emailed me back.
Now the worst...
My sister and I started a business selling a local company's catalog
returns/store displays etc- they only have one outlet so it is a good
situation for us.
A customer got her item from us, and wasn't happy.
Did she contact us and ask for a return?
Did she email a. . . (read post) |

Well I know I said I was going to hold onto a few of my Mumble Penguins as an investment, but I couldn't resist. I sold all 9 that I had bought.
Total investment = $198 Sold for avg price of $49.99 Total Sales = $397.92 Profit Before Ebay & Paypal Fees = $199.92
I have to say it was a great experience- easy to write the listing and just had to hit relist.
The whole experience got me thinking....perhaps I have been sniffing at the wrong dumpster.
Perhaps there is more cash to be made at the mall than the resale shop.
Wouldn't you know it Build a Bear came into some more Mumbles right after Christmas.

BREAKING NEWS
BUILD A BEAR WORKSHOP STORES GOT AN UNEXPECTED SHIPMENT OF MUMBLES TODAY- CALL YOUR LOCAL STORE AND LOAD UP!
Another tip: Ask your local store if they have any Mumble sounds, at $3.00 a piece they are selling for around 20 on EBay- a better return than Mumble himself.
Also if they have the fish, igloo or Eskimo outfit those are also very hard to find and will add to the value of your Build a Bear.
I was there this week and according to the Senior Stuffing Specialist this is the last shipment of Mumbles period and each store only got 1 or 2 boxes.
Currently Mumble sans sound is going for about $45.00, I am going to sell 3 or 4 at this price to recoup my initial investment and I am going to sit on the remainder of the Mumbles for prices to increase to an average of $75 then I'm selling out.
Don't worry about Christmas, other Build a Bear rares sell at high prices in Jan/Feb so I wouldnt worry about being stuck with them. We shall see....

The Queen's mailbag overfloweth!
Everyone wants to know...
When is the best time to sell crap for Christmas?
People don't freak if last week sucked for you- it's holiday time honey. RQ rule #387 Never have An Auction End Within 2 Days of a Major Holiday. This includes Thanksgiving, Mother's Day, St. Patrick's and Valentine's Day. People are doing other things those days like traveling, eating, drinking or each other- so don't waste your insertion fee dollar!
If you are trying to unload some Holiday items- start your listing Monday the 26th. I heard at the post office that parcel post is running way behind so stick to priority or even better UPS/FEDEX.
As far as hot items like TMX/PS3- the faster you ditch them the better don't sit on these items, the market could flood close to Christmas. Remember Sony and Sesame Street aren't getting a cut of Ebay sales.
If you want to sit on something pick up the Build a Bear Mumble the Penguin- and wait a few months I am predicting $95-$145 unstuffed after they sell out based on past year's BABW performance. Adios People RQ

Question: I found your sight in my search to find if my tmx elmos would still sell well closer to Christmas (I'm sure you noticed the expected drop over the holiday). I sold pretty heavy for a month or two last year and then bought heavier on ebay than I sold. I stopped buying do to a couple really bad experiences and and back to the selling side; when I started my biggest concern was taxes (When to charge, when to declare, what forms, etc...) and at what point I became a business versus an individual selling a couple items on ebay. I didn't know what it all entailed and just decided to drop selling for a while. Stay at home mom as well, knowing my ebay options would be helpful. What have you learned about declaring taxes at the end of the year, etc / and at what you become a business and need to start worrying about legalities. Thanks for your time Amy
Answer:
Without fail this is THE cocktail party question I get asked once I cop to selling on Ebay as a mommy profession: "Do you have to pay taxes on that?
What people really want to know is: "Do YOU pay taxes?" Though generally, people are far to polite to be that forward.
According to my accountant, tax year '05 was the first year the IRS had a professional category named "online auction sales".
I pay taxes. It is. . . (read post) |
