Good Advice on Finding American Girl Dolls for Cheap Online
0 comments      Added on 10/25/08 by betsy

I have some advice for you guys if you are hunting online for  American Girl items on the cheap.  My daughter has 7 of the dolls and I also buy them all the time to sell.  The most I have ever paid for a doll is $30, but that was for Lindsey the first girl of the year which I sold for $250.  The last one I bought was Elizabeth for $1, the lady didn't care because her overindulgent mother-in-law had bought it as a gift for her daughter.  People always ask me how do you find American Girl stuff at garage sales?

Well, this is how:

1. Craigslist, if you just go onto Craigslist for your local area and click the link for "for sale" type "American Girl" into the search box at the top of the page.  You will find American Girl dolls not only for sale in the "items for sale" section but also the garage sale section.  Since Craigslist is free and newspapers charge per word some people go into great detail in their listings and by typing "American Girl" into that top search box you will pull up all the listings that have American Girl stuff.  Another bonus of finding it at a garage sale, no shipping cost!

People also are selling American Girl stuff in the classified and while some is kinda high Ebay priced, I found a woman selling 6 dolls and an Armoire for $125 for everything, she was a mom who thought played with dolls. . .  (read post)

Great American Yard Sale Plan of Attack 2007
0 comments      Added on 08/06/07 by Betsy

Superbowl Sunday is right around the corner people.  Time to break out the sleeping bags and bag lady carts.

THE GREAT AMERICAN YARD SALE!!!!

Every year I have a plan of attack, wake at 4am and stand in line for 5 hours waiting for the gates of junker's paradise to swing wide....and every year I am inevitably dissapointed with what I find.

The real fun of this massive yard sale is not in the digging and pillaging through mounds of other people's crap- for me that's just another day at the office.

All I got last year was a Playmobil Mansion, Crib Tents and some well loved pajama bottoms (OK I know that's a little gross but they had South Park print).

The best part is being in line.

When I tell the other mommies at Tae Kwon Do or swmming lessons what I do, they generally say, "isn't that interesting," then take the first opportunity to politely scooch to another seat.

If you can tolerate the smell, standing in a line of 600 people at 7am standing on blacktop in 80 degree heat and Chicago humidity will be the place to be on August 18th.

Newer Plushies to Collect and Sell as a Lot

Right now I have about 36 Care Bears in my house.  I am not bragging.  I know that is weird.  But they have been selling thus I am driven to constantly replenish my stash.

Typically I put 12 or more of them in a lot, I figure the more variety of characters there are the more bidder I will hook.  I will sell the 12 for $20-40.  Keep in mind I pay 50 cents a piece so that's not all that bad- not super great but it's a living- sort of.

Teletubbies also sell but those are logical lots, one of each of the talking Tubsters.  If you unzip their back you can remove the talk box and they come out of the washing machine looking new- you need to put them in a pillow case so their rubber heads don't get all marked up.

Vermont Teddy Bears - they are so ridiculously expensive new and they are not worth a ton on Ebay unless- and I have found this several times-people get them as gifts then throw them fully dressed with all accessories straight into a garage sale or donation bin.

Then you can get $30 a piece for them.  Otherwise I sell them in a lot of 3 or more.  Expect to get $12-15 for 3 naked bears or $25-30 for 3 dressed bears.

Build a Bear Workshop- now you all know that I was the first one to call the Mumble craze- I just knew it! I hope you all followed my advice and invested there.

The Only Furniture I Sell
0 comments      Added on 01/16/07 by Betsy

When my first child Elliot was born my mother in law, whom I despise, gave me an ugly chair.  I dutifully put said ugly chair in Elliot's nursery.  Every time I passed ugly chair I thought about how much I hated my mother in law.

Two years later we moved and I decides to purge on the furniture a bit- who the hell really uses a baby glider anyway?

I listed mother in laws hell rocker on Ebay starting at $9.99.

What I didn't realize was that this poverty stricken women had chosen to invest her entire tax refund into a Dutailier glider.  Fortunately for me many others shared her passion for ugly chairs and I sold that glider sans ottoman pick up only for $456.00.

Ever since then I can't resist.

I buy them whenever I see them and they sell very well, plus the buyer is getting a great deal because they are so expensive so a glider and ottoman for $250 beats the hell out of $1000 ( my most recent one sold for $250).

The other chair I love is the ergonomic kneeling chair, you come across these vintage 70's beauties pretty frequently and they are worth some cash!  $200 plus for a real Balans chair.

I must not be the only one with fond memories of the Pong throne.

Only one problem- they spontaneously combust when handled by UPS.  So I do pick up only so my chairs don't sell as high.  If. . .  (read post)

The Coach\Dooney Connection

This is a somewhat slower time of year on Ebay for me since toys are my mainstay.  I am going to venture forth into a new realm, one quite popular with the Ebay mommy who think Goodwill is gross: the outlet mall.

I have been advised this time of year is great for reselling outlet stuff - the inventory is high since unsold Christmas items are shipped in and prices are low since the holidays are over.

My source also tells me ladies are on the prowl for the gifts they wanted and didn't get - like a $250 wallet for $120.

See you at the outlets! (read post)
