The first thing I did was call the Toys R Us in Times Square, which proved pointless.  All of their employees are too busy pushing tickets to the indoor Ferris Wheel with a priceless view of the diaper department to answer the phone.

I really didn't want to go there.  Times Square is a very cool place if you go once.  Times Square is not as cool when that is where your Toys R Us is.  Most people don't have to turn down double-decker bus rides and leap frog over Canadians drunk on electricity to buy a Barbie.

So before riding 2 subways and a bus to electric lady land I thought I would just try the local overpriced toy store that people don't really shop at.  I think every town has one of these.  Our store is called The Toy Zone at State News and is located on 86th st. on the Upper East Side between Lex and Park.

The shop owner proudly directed me to a mega display of ZhuZhu wonder.  He told me the individual hamsters sold out the first day, but for 39.99 I could buy a play house & track set that comes with a hamster in the box.  This seemed like a lot, especially when PetSmart is across the street and I could probably get the same cat toy for 12.99, but being a good Auntie I bought it. 

I had him double bag it so I wouldn't be thumped by a hamster crazed tourist in Times Square and jumped on the train.

At Toys R Us, I disappointed the staff by turning down a ticket to the big wheel and asked where the Zhu Zhus were.  They pointed to a bank of registers where under the protection of Geoffrey's soldiers was a pile of hamster robots 40 high. 

They have every flavor of hamster as well as the he gigantic play set that was selling on Ebay for nearly $300.

The bummer part, I waited in line for 40 minutes to get my kids one of the $10 hamsters.  The awesome part, I didn't pay $30 for my roborat.

Before I go into the standby ticket process, I will tell you about the normal ticket process.  In the month of August you send an email to snltickets@nbcuni.com  which enters you into a drawing.  After going down to NBC studios in Rockafeller center and talking to the pages who manage the ticket distribution for standbys, your chances of getting tickets through this method are about 5%.

If you are lucky enough to get tickets through the drawing you will be notified in September.  There are 2 different shows every Saturday night, one is the dress rehearsal which is held around 8:30 and of course the live taping.  You will be issued tickets for one of these if you are lucky enough to get tickets at all. You have no control over the date of the show you will attend and they will only give you 2 tickets, which sucks if you have more than one friend.If you have not heard and September has passed then you have no chance of getting tickets for that year, in other words tickets for 2009-2010 season have already been distributed and are no longer available.

However that weird method of distribution which seems so frustrating leaves a door open to getting tickets another way.  That is by stand by.

Now NBC has already sent out the almost 300 tickets for each show, but that doesn't mean that the recipient who registered in August can afford to go in April or they might get tickets on their Great Aunts 97th birthday and be guilted into spending that particular date eating rice pudding with MeeMaw rather than at SNL.

NBC has no idea how many people will be attending a taping.  So they do not ever know how many stand by ticket holders will get in.

My friend and I stopped by Friday morning and asked what time people line up, we were told people sleep out under the Rainbow Room sign.  We decided that since it was December and Blake Lively was the host it was safe to come at around 4am and at least sleep some in a bed.

When we arrived at 4am, there was a line of people sleeping in camp chairs.  The line didn't seem that long though so we stood out waiting for that magic time of 7am standby ticket distribution.  This gave me plenty of time to interview the other people in line about their experience. 

One guy had come to Taylor Swift's show a few weeks prior and waited for stand by tickets.  He was 123rd in line and not realizing there was really no shot of him getting into either show he came back at 11:00 at night only to be sent home. We also learned that the first people in line had lined up at 11:30 AM Friday, just before lunch and set up camp.

We also discussed strategy, as a stand by you have a choice of getting dress rehearsal or live taping tickets.  There were different theories on which were better tickets, or which would be more likely to get you in.  Some said they had heard the dress rehearsal is more fun since the cast is more relaxed than at the live show.

My friend and I decided to choose the show that had the least amount of stand by tickets given out already.  This seemed like a sound plan until it was 7am and we were presented with the option of number 38 & 39 for the dress rehersal or 44 & 45 for the live taping.  So that means that even lining up at 4am we were 71st and 72nd in line.  We impulsively chose the live show since it didn't seem like all that big of a difference.  We had to be back at 10:45 and line up in order.

At 10:35, we walked by all those lucky people who got tickets in the drawing last year and lined up.  While waiting I quizzed the page on the odds, she said that sometimes there is only 1 standby seat open and one night there were 90 so it just depends. I asked her how many people got into the dress rehersal, she told me 6 which means a lot of people sleeping on that sidewalk didn't get in.

The page also told us that the seats on the floor that are regular chairs that you sometimes see in the wide shots on TV are reserved for NBC corporate execs or celebrities.  They are not for the public since they have direct access to the stage.  Instead the general audience sit in stadium seats in the back.

The people with the reserved seats were in a roped area directly across from us and we did see Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin on The Office.

After 11:00 they pulled the first 30 standby ticket holders through security.  It was repeatedly announced that the first 30 will be taken upstairs but this is no guarantee of getting a seat, that the first 30 always get to go up and then they will fill in seats and either call for more standbys or send the remainders home.

After another 10 minutes of standing there, we were told "Thanks, We Don't Need Anyone Else".

Lessons from the experience, if this is on your bucket list plan on lining up at lunch time Friday and sleeping there, I would try to be first or second or it isn't worth your time.

Well, this is how:

1. Craigslist, if you just go onto Craigslist for your local area and click the link for "for sale" type "American Girl" into the search box at the top of the page.  You will find American Girl dolls not only for sale in the "items for sale" section but also the garage sale section.  Since Craigslist is free and newspapers charge per word some people go into great detail in their listings and by typing "American Girl" into that top search box you will pull up all the listings that have American Girl stuff.  Another bonus of finding it at a garage sale, no shipping cost!

People also are selling American Girl stuff in the classified and while some is kinda high Ebay priced, I found a woman selling 6 dolls and an Armoire for $125 for everything, she was a mom who thought played with dolls werent worth much and didnt want to mess with Ebay.  Check this frequently because there are frequent posts and the stuff goes fast!

2. Ebay, I know everyone says Ebay is so expensive.  Well, I have to tell you when I need $40 for groceries I put up American Girl dolls for buy it now $40.  So when you are searching on Ebay, modify your search by checking the "Buy It Now" listings box on the left side of the page and "Just Listed" as well- if someone puts up Jess for $45 it will be gone fast.

Also for some reason people call American Girl stuff AG on Ebay, as though the Ebay search bot magically knows that this is American Girl, so if you type AG doll into the search box you are going to get a lot of homemade clothes a gramma made that "fit AG dolls" but you will also find dolls listed without American Girl in the title which are going to have way fewer people finding them and thus have a lower sales price.

Some sellers list dolls as Pleasant Company, some sellers think Pleasant is spelled Pleasent, a frequent mistake so check that too.  Sellers also sometimes only list the dolls name like their whole title will be "Kit doll" no AG/American Girl/Pleasant Company. So keep an eye out for that.

3.  Did you know that Goodwill ( as in the thrift store/charity) has their own auction site?  When people bring in great stuff sometimes they pull it to the side and put it up on their auction site.  If you go to shopgoodwill.com there is a round search icon on the top right of the page, click that then type in American Girl or Pleasant Company and there are always dolls on this site.  You do have to register for to use the site, but it is a pretty easy Ebay-esque type of deal. 

One of the most frequent stores selling their American Girl stuff this way: the Madison, WI store where the annual outlet sale used to be held and just down the road from  Middleton, WI where the company began and where the outlet store is and the current annual sale is held.

My last stop was in South Elgin, Il - it's a bit of a hike and considering my cart was empty walking out, don't think I will be walking in again soon. Something caught my eye, a sign taped to the inside of the locked 'good shit' glass case which stated in all capped Sharpie "Authenticity of Designer Purses Cannot Be Guaranteed NO REFUNDS".

Inside the case was the typical Coach resale line up: Beekman briefcase, City bag, Station bag and the unsellable Court bag.  The crazy thing was that the prices were way higher than my local Goodwill for similar items, they wanted $54.99 for a City Bag that looked like it had been dragged across the Jewel parking lot on a hot day.

I wonder if Goodwill considers themselves to be an outlet store in direct competition with the Coach outlet which is about 5 miles away and where you can walk out the door with a new purse for $65 and you don't have to pick asphalt out of the seams?

Though I would be lying if I didn't cop to being rescued by a small package hidden deep within an unused pocket of my resale Coach Hamptons tote, a new Maxi pad left there by the girl scout who bought it new.

Coach outlet should take note, Goodwill does have you beat on the pre-stocked purse tip.

While most people would balk at driving miles in the opposite direction of civilization down a road  called "the blacktop" during a blizzard, I see nothing but opportunity. The prospect of an excellent auction lay at the end of the blacktop.

I knew that this adventure we were embarking on seemed a lot like the beginning of  a predictable Discovery Channel show that could possibly end with me breaking off frozen toes and eating them out of desperation, but I also figured that the suburban hipsters looking for more treasure-clutter for their ecletijunk houses would stay away on such a day.

My only competition would be a small crowd in Carhardts using this as a "going to town" excuse.

I was right.

It is one thing to hear on NPR that spending is down this Christmas, that foreclosures are "on the rise", that people are buying fewer "durable goods" this year.  That sounds like a dip on a bar graph, nothing to be concerned to deeply about.
However, for the first time in all the years I have been selling other people's junk on Ebay I am scrambling to make money.
Goodwill is just empty.
As a result, the mood is tense, even competitive.
In years past the regulars and an ever-changing cast of hopefuls engaged in good natured "I had my finger on it before you did" fun.
The weeks before Christmas are typically the time when the wealthy are purging the presents of the past to make way for this year's gluttony in the name of charity and tax exemptions.  This year was the first time I saw parents fight over a toy.
They actually got in a pulling match over an air hockey table, complete with crying children looking on.
I emptied my cart back onto the shelf and went home and pulled up some toys my kids don't play with anymore.
While there are a lot of Ebayers and weird women who sleep on beds of old newspaper there are also families that depend on Goodwill for Santa toys.
I quit buying toys for resale a few weeks ago, there just isn't enough stock to go around.

Thinking about the gas I guzzled into the dry throat of the Volvo, about the shakes I got from drinking too much coffee at 5 in the morning in line for the Catholic's garbage doesn't seem so bad...and I decided I have had it.

Sitting online waiting for auctions to end this afternoon I realized most mommies are probably reading romance novels and having "me" moments while I sit in the basement waiting for an Arkansas grammie to figure if she wants to spend that much on Build a Bears when a miracle happened.

Karma intervened.

I sold a bowl for $100. 

A mashed potato bowl.

I just paid my electric bill with a mashed potato bowl.

The time of year when people call Empire carpet to freshen up for the Aunt Trudy.  And how can sweet Aunt Trudy squeal with jealousy over the new Berber if she can't see it?

She just left me a neutral and said she bought the bag under the assumption it was real and it was not.

I emailed and emailed and she totally blew me off. 

The bag was real, but the serial numbers of Kate Spades are easy to miss- still she could have emailed me back.

Now the worst...

My sister and I started a business selling a local company's catalog returns/store displays etc- they only have one outlet so it is a good situation for us.

A customer got her item from us, and wasn't happy.

Did she contact us and ask for a return?

Did she email a neg feedback threat?

No she called the company directly.

Sweet.

 One grumpasauras rex just screwed up months of building a relationship and blew my whole pay off the Visa plan.
 
I wish you could  to pay an extra 50 cents a listing for Ebay to hire Indonesian customer service reps say "I am sorry for your trouble- I am authorized to extend to you an offer of free shipping on any item up to 4.95 in value.

That would be perfect.

Email tends to bring out the worst in people, or it could be that other anti-social crumudgeon types like myself prefer to shop without social interaction so the grumpy asshole quotient is higher.

THE GREAT AMERICAN YARD SALE!!!!

Every year I have a plan of attack, wake at 4am and stand in line for 5 hours waiting for the gates of junker's paradise to swing wide....and every year I am inevitably dissapointed with what I find.

The real fun of this massive yard sale is not in the digging and pillaging through mounds of other people's crap- for me that's just another day at the office.

All I got last year was a Playmobil Mansion, Crib Tents and some well loved pajama bottoms (OK I know that's a little gross but they had South Park print).

The best part is being in line.

When I tell the other mommies at Tae Kwon Do or swmming lessons what I do, they generally say, "isn't that interesting," then take the first opportunity to politely scooch to another seat.

If you can tolerate the smell, standing in a line of 600 people at 7am standing on blacktop in 80 degree heat and Chicago humidity will be the place to be on August 18th.

Came across my first blue box garage sale Tiffany item today.

Normally, when I come across good stuff at garage sales I try not to get too attached or excited. I don't ask questions about authenticity.  I don't do anything to let on that I will not be parted from the item in my hand.

It is hard to be detached and disinterested in Tiffany.

"Why are you selling Tiffany at a garage sale?"

I had to ask especially since it didn't look like a Tiffany in the box sort of neighborhood.

"Wedding present from my mother in law.  They are her taste not mine.  Two bucks."

Funny isn't it.  Mother-in-laws can't win.  I know mine can't. 

My wedding present was a homemade wreath with a jam packed Walmart potpourri center, wrapped in pink netting to allow for scent escape and topped off with a beady bow.

I thought about telling this chick she needed to practice more gratitude and that she could probably sell these for more than two bucks.

So now Karma came around and hooked me up with a belated wedding present.

I haven't decided whether to sell them or keep them.  They are worth around $50-60 on Ebay, but I hate to kick Karma in the teeth by selling them.

Kris drafted me onto team smith this week as part of our ongoing effort to raise money to pay off tax debt. It seems very logical; sell a bunch of audio production equipment and the computer we barely use and mail the proceeds to Uncle Sam.

So we took magnificient photos, scoured our closets for original boxes and researched on Ebay & Sweetwater. Then the stuff just sat. It is hard to sell something for $500 less than you paid for it at Thanksgiving. I am way more comfortable with my typical 50 cents turned into $30 dollars mark up.

It is all listed now and for some reason everyone in Denmark is taking a moment from their morning hashish break to email me for a shipping quote or my personal favorite international request, "hey i know i paid $1800 for it, but could you write like $50 on the customs declaration- our taxes are a bitch".

What they are actually asking me is "From one greedy housewife to another, would you please assist me in evading taxes and commit mail fraud by undervaluing your product?" Ugh.

This year it is on July 21st and 22nd, inconveniently located in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin. Other things to enjoy in Osh Kosh: Burger King and (tell me you didn't see this one coming) the Osh Kosh B'Gosh Outlet. I asked the clerk at the AG store when people start lining up. I wasn't shocked to learn people line up the day before and sleep out around here people do that for decent garage sales. I did a search for the hell of it on Ebay and was surprised to see several sellers hawking get in early tickets to the sale.

The sale starts at either 8 or 9 , but for a mere $120 a person you can go at 7am. So why does AG hoard all of the good crap for one day when mommies are driving up to Osh Kosh right and left to be disappointed by their "outlet"? For charity. The Madison Children's Museum gets the proceeds from the sale as well as the few 7am tickets being sold.

My sister/apprentice scheduled her daughters party for that day. I could find an excuse but when my sister/apprentice comes over on the 23rd and can't find a seat without moving Marisol's wave runner she may be suspicous. If you go email me and let me know how it was...

Other things to enjoy in Osh Kosh: Burger King and (tell me you didn't see this one coming) the Osh Kosh B'Gosh Outlet. I asked the clerk at the AG store when people start lining up. I wasn't shocked to learn people line up the day before and sleep out around here people do that for decent garage sales. I did a search for the hell of it on Ebay and was surprised to see several sellers hawking get in early tickets to the sale.

The sale starts at either 8 or 9 , but for a mere $120 a person you can go at 7am. So why does AG hoard all of the good crap for one day when mommies are driving up to Osh Kosh right and left to be disappointed by their "outlet"? For charity. The Madison Children's Museum gets the proceeds from the sale as well as the few 7am tickets being sold.

My sister/apprentice scheduled her daughters party for that day. I could find an excuse but when my sister/apprentice comes over on the 23rd and can't find a seat without moving Marisol's wave runner she may be suspicous. If you go email me and let me know how it was...

Where were the awesome deals? Apparently the company reserves all of the factory screw ups and customer returns (in other words the good deals) for their annual sale. This year it is on July 21st and 22nd, inconveniently located in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin. Yes, I got to go to the American Girl outlet store.

I was so excited that the tantrums and crying (lots of roadwork) on the way up didn't even bother me. I was going to my Graceland and no one was going to bring me down.

When the children and I fell out of the car covered in stale partially digested Goldfish crackers a brief 6 hours and 3 poopy diapers later. I was a little weirded out. Here is a massive company bajillions in sales, and it is the size of Baby Gap. Ugh. Once inside I was disappointed to find that they do not carry dolls AT ALL - not a one. They do carry all of the critters like Coconut, Licorice and all the AG pets as well as the pet accessories. Other than that all they have is clothes, and some of the doll clothes.

While the clothes are cute, they are infinitely cuter in the catalog on Kit's living look-a-like than they are hanging on a round chrome rack. What was even more disappointing was that most things were the same price as they are in the catalog, I guess you are saving a little by not paying shipping but it is not worth driving all day for.

They did have a small clearance table. White Bitty Baby shoes were $1 a pair so I got some of those to sell. They also had pink suede AG doll size boots and forest green boots- probably left overs from winter. They were three bucks a pair which while an OK deal wasn't quite the awesome deal I was looking for. This is what I ended up with 2 Bitty Twins discontinued Xmas set Ret.$44 I paid $14 for 6 pairs white Bitty shoes $1 a piece Bitty Twins boys retired sleeper $6 Elliot my son had to get Licorice which was the same old 19 bucks he is online and he got a few accessories some of which like the carrier were the catalog price.

I also got my two year old and her little friend American Girl Store New York t-shirts for 6 a piece. They have never been to New York, but I was so desperate for a deal they suckered me with the cheap tourist t. The only other deeply discounted thing were Bitty Baby Chocolate Cherry outfits which were $9 for the dress set and $10 for the coat. The matching girl's coat (of which they only had 1 left) was still $34.

When I came home and looked up the Bitty Twins outfit, I saw to my dismay they are selling for about $9.99. Every stay at home mommy in the Osh Kosh area must sell the outlet stuff. They had a few of the furniture type of stuff like the Bitty Baby wagon which was $25 there.

So, if you live within 20 minutes of the American Girl outlet it is probably not a bad deal. If you are a Chicago suburbanite- check out the clearance area of the American Girl site it is the same stuff and the same prices.
